How to measure your fence.
All you need is a tape measure. Measure each straight, level run of fence to the inch. That’s all the price builder needs.
- 01
Sketch your fence from above
Draw the fence line as if you were looking down from the sky. Mark every end, every corner and every gate. Each straight stretch between them is one run.
- 02
Measure each straight run
Run a tape along the top of the fence from end post to end post and write down the length in feet and inches. Stop at gate posts; the fence on each side of a gate is its own run.
- 03
Split at corners and steps
Each run must be straight and level from end to end. Where the fence turns a corner or steps up or down, start a new run. Fence sections that follow a continuous slope are not currently supported.
- 04
Measure your fence height
Measure from the ground to the top of the fence. Add the topper height you want to see the finished height, and check it against your city and HOA limits.
- 05
Note your posts
Note what your fence posts are made of (wood, vinyl or metal) and how far apart they are. The fence extenders that hold your topper attach to these posts.
- 06
Enter your numbers
Type each run in feet and inches into the price builder, confirm each run is straight and level, and choose a height and color. It shows your total right away.
- If your fence steps down a hill, measure each level section as its own run.
- Measure to the inch. The panel straps take up 4 to 6 in of slack.
- Many cities cap backyard fences at 6 to 8 ft. Check before you order.
